Pasquale Pistorio wins IEEE Noyce Medal

SAN FRANCISCO—Pasquale Pistorio, former president and CEO of STMicroelectronics NV, has been named the winner of the 2011 IEEE Robert N. Noyce Medal.

They Noyce Medal, among the most prestigious awards in microelectronics, is awarded for "exceptional contributions to the microelectronics industry."

Pistorio, who remains honorary chairman of ST, is set to receive the medal at the IEEE Honors Ceremony here Saturday (Aug. 20). The medal is sponsored by the Intel Foundation.

In 1980, Pistorio left his position as general manager of Motorola Corp.'s international semiconductor division to become CEO of the only remaining microelectronics company in his native Italy, SGS Group.

Pistorio led the merger of SGS Group with France’s Thomson Semiconducteurs to form what is now ST (originally known as SGS-Thomson Microelectronics). With Pistorio as president and CEO, the combined company rose from less than $1 billion in sales in 1987 to over $9 billion in sales at the time of his retirement from day-to-day operations in 2005.

Pistorio, who also received the EE Times ACE Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010, has throughout his career championed good corporate citizenship and environmental responsibility.

Past winners of the IEEE Robert N. Noyce Medal include Morris Chang of TSMC, Craig Barrett of Intel, Wilfred Corrigan of LSI Logic, Aart de Geus of Synopsys and James Morgan of Applied Materials, among others.

Everyone (still) loves Pasquale Pistorio

Trying to get Pasquale Pistorio to boast about receiving an award—even one as prestigious as the IEEE Robert N. Noyce Medal—is a fool's errand.

Some executives have a disconcerting habit of slipping into the first person when talking about their companies (i.e. "I can ship twice as much product as my closest competitor" or "I moved some of my manufacturing to China.")

Pistorio is basically the antithesis of these people. Urged to elaborate on his feelings about the Noyce Medal—which he picked up over the weekend in a ceremony in San Francisco—Pistorio uses two words more than all others: "we" and "team."

Pistorio is certainly honored about receiving the Noyce Medal, which is awarded for exceptional contributions to the microelectronics industry. But he bends over backwards to make absolutely certain that you understand that he could never have received it without the hard work of a lot of very talented people. In his view, personal awards like the Noyce Medal and the EE Times ACE Lifetime Achievement Award, which he received last year, are a reflection of the success of ST Microelectronics NV, which he helmed from the late 1980s—when the company was formed through the merger of Italy's SGS Group and France’s Thomson Semiconducteurs —until 2005.

Reminded that the Noyce Medal is an individual award, not one that recognizes an entire company, Pistorio sums up his accomplishments simply and without fanfare. "I did my job," he says.

Though he goes out of his way to stress the teamwork involved, Pistorio is clearly proud of the turnaround he helped orchestrate at ST, which he describes as "a success story of people; of a team." When SGS and Thomson merged in 1987, both companies were deficient in several areas, Pistorio says. That year, the company did less than $1 billion in sales. "The company was quite sick," Pistorio says, adding that many in the semiconductor industry and the financial community did not expect the merged entity to survive.

Cut to 2005, when Pistorio stepped down as CEO (he still holds the title of honorary chairman at ST), and the company's sales were approaching $10 billion.

Pistorio credits focus on three areas for the turnaround—innovation, globalization (establishing the ST brand throughout the world) and productivity, driven by a culture emphasizing the concept of total quality management.

An important part of Pistorio's management philosophy is that employees must feel that they are part of the decision-making process in the company in order to feel engaged. "If people understand that you are honest, dedicated and transparent and won't ask them to do more than you would do yourself, people will follow you," he said.

Pistorio Foundation Newsletter March 2011

Dear Friends,
As the Pistorio Foundation continues to grow in scope and strength, we would like to renew our sincere gratitude to our supporters who have enabled us to sustain our fundraising goals, despite the difficult global economic situation of 2010, to our volunteer project managers and auditors, and to our committed volunteer fundraising team in Singapore.  At the end of 2010 we reached out to 1668 children throughout five countries, namely Thailand, Cambodia, Tibet (China), Burkina Faso and Morocco. These children come from the poorest and most marginalized communities in their countries and would not be able to attend school without our support. Our support includes providing school uniforms and supplies, as well as at least one nutritious meal per day and primary health care. Ensuring that these children reach professional school, they are able to break their families' cycle of poverty, and we believe that the number of children that we are able to support successfully in their long-term schooling is the most tangible and impactful result of our efforts.
In Thailand, where we also recently completed a Dormitory building for professional school students and a Kindergarten, we have reaped the fruits of our Village Model Approach. Village by village we ensure that no child gets left behind and is able to receive quality formal education.  Subsequently, we address issues of women empowerment and village development. We leverage on the expertise and support of existing local NGOs to promote village development focused on three areas: basic adult education (literacy and numeracy); agriculture; and income generating activities. Today, most of our villages are cultivating their land not only for their own consumption but also to sell to existing non-profit organizations. All village households are involved in embroidery work that is then bought by other non-profit organizations. These activities have already significantly improved the income of families. The aim is for each village to become self-sustainable within 10 years. While our main focus is education, we are aware that in order to meaningfully improve the living conditions of the children, it is also important to improve the income earning possibilities of the parents.
Operating with no overhead costs in 2010, the Foundation has been able to channel all available resources to projects on location.  This was made possible thanks to our volunteers worldwide and to our generous donors and sponsors. Thank you again for your continuous trust and support.
Warm regards,
Pasquale Pistorio
Founder and President

Chiang Rai Village Project - Inauguration of Laura Tirelli Kindergarten and Professional School Dormitories
Inauguration of Laura Tirelli Kindergarten
The Kindergarten was named in honor of Laura Tirelli, a close friend and supporter of the Pistorio Foundation, who passed away at the young age of 39 after a long battle with cancer.

This building completes the primary school complex in Ban Mhai Pattana'. The complex now has 3 two-story buildings: the Primary School, the Dormitory and the Kindergarten. In Thailand, Kindergarten (which last 2 years) is considered part of the mandatory school curriculum and the facilities are always built with and considered part of the primary school. There are currently 22 students attending the Kindergarten. We would like to thank all the supporters, volunteers, and friends that joined us in this ceremony, as well as Country Manager Lino Battan who volunteers many weeks on location to audit the programs of the Chiang Rai Village Project and to do due diligence for new construction projects and for collaborations with new villages.

Inauguration of Professional School Dormitories for Hill-Tribe Students
As part of our long-term scholarship, we ensure that every child we support completes professional school.

On February 25, we inaugurated a new dormitory for boys and a house for girls that we built at the VBAC Professional School in Chiang Rai which offers professional school courses from IT, to Accounting, as well as for becoming a Tour Operator, Radio Broadcaster, Electrician or Mechanic, among other professions. 70 hill-tribe students from our villages who are on Pistorio Foundation Scholarship now attend VBAC.

The girls and are housed in three houses, of which one donated by the Pistorio Foundation. The house we built consists of 3 rooms with 5 to 6 girls in each room.

The Boys Dormitory we inaugurated consists of 7 rooms that house a total of 38 boys. We further funded the creation of a soccer field and a basketball court, as well as a kitchen and canteen opposite the dormitory.

Doing good on all fronts

Pasquale Pistorio Speaks at Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy on Sustainable Solutions to the Energy Challenge, March 2011, Singapore

Pasquale Pistorio has been an industry champion and pioneer for the environment while CEO and President at STMicroelectronics.  In 2001 he founded STMicroelectronics Foundation to tackle the problem of the digital divide, and the Foundation to date has provided basic IT skills to over 110,000 people in marginalized and impoverished communities around the world.  Upon his retirement in 2005, he has founded the Pistorio Foundation and at the same time continued to champion the cause of the Envrionment, advocating for this publically in Italy, during his tenure as Confindustria Vice President at the Head of Research and Development, and is frequently called upon to give a testimony of the STMicroelectronics experience both in terms of the industrial success and growth of the company as well as for its pioneering environmentally responsable corporate policies.

The speech outlined the risks still inherent in Nuclear Power, the need for governments, business and individuals to pursue more aggressively Energy Efficiency and Alternative Energies as the only viable options in the few decades to come, until Nuclear can really be considered a safe option (will happen with 4th generation), and how governments, business, and individuals actually save money and profit in the process, making it foolish not to choose this options.

Some comments from participants:

  • "Energy is an area quite new to me, and I learnt much from Mr Pistorio's discourse on energy efficiency and renewable energy in particular."
  • "He is a very enlightened man & we all have much to learn from his example."
  • "I was truly inspired by him."
  • "He is very inspiring on what businesses can do (to help the environment) and make money (in the process)!"
  • "His speech gave a very interesting and relevant outline of how businesses can reduce emissions and make money."
